Mosaic Art

We have been learning about using apps on our Chromebook to create images that look like mosaics or stained glass windows. We used Google Draw to make some and some people also used Sumopaint. Here is the image I made using Sumopaint/Google Draw. I chose a Tuatara because I have experience making animals as a mosaic

Work

his week we carried on with our ‘insect’ topic for reading, writing, handwriting and art. For maths we practised basic facts and worked on writing a variety of equations which would have a certain number for the answer. We also practised solving problems using place value or known facts knowledge. Here is a selection of my work:

Metamorphosis Writing

Yet another thing we did for writing this week was to imagine that we had undergone metamorphosis.

We had to pretend we had woken up one morning and discovered we had changed. It would be like going to sleep as a caterpillar and waking up as a butterfly. We had to write about what our new body was like and what we could do. I chose to :.....

The Scientific, Scientific Method

Last week in Te Ngahere we learnt about a method. ‘What is that method?” you say. Well it is the Scientific Method. The Scientific Method consists of 8 steps. The first step being to ask a question. The second step is Gather Information and Observe, and the third step is make a hypothesis. Then the next two steps are Experiment and test your hypothesis and analyze your test results. The sixth step is to modify your hypothesis if it is necessary. The next step is to present your conclusion and the eighth and the final step is to Retest. The reason we were learning this was for the upcoming science fair and for our GREAT MARBLE CHALLENGE!! I think that I could use this in the future for when the science fair is happening or when I am preparing for the science fair. I think I did well when making a ramp for The Great Marble Challenge because I was trying to follow the steps of the Scientific Method. I think I could do better when the science fair is on I will be prepared on how to do it. Have you ever heard of the Scientific Method?

The Writing About Broken

Hi in Te Ngahere we started this new piece of writing called Broken we are doing this to try to improve on our writing by using vivid adjectives, emotive language and tried to enhance mood and atmosphere. It is based of the game rock paper scissors. We had to pick one scene from the video and then had to rewrite it. I chose the scene when the scissors guy was coming towards them then the paper girl and rock golem try to defend themselves. Then the scissors guy cuts the paper girl then as the rock golem gets angry he tries to attack the scissors guy but he is avoiding but he finally got a hit on him and then finished him. Then he rushes back to the paper lady and picks her up just to find out he would be damaged touching her he carried her all the way back to a rock. Then he laid her down on the rock after she was revived but the rock golem sadly passed while reviving her. So I chose to write about that scene when all of that happened. Have you ever seen the video?

The Fantastic Trip To Urupukapuka Island

Kia ora, in Te Ngahere the year sixes went to Urupukapuka Island to help Project Island Song in what they do. Project Island Song are people that help islands and try to make them pest free so far they have done that with 7 islands. Early in the morning when we got to school we left at 8:30 in the morning so we could catch the ferry in time so we could get to Urupukapuka Island. We were assigned jobs there were Biosecurity, Health and Safety, Construction, Media Team and Planters. The people with the biosecurity jobs role was to check our bags to make sure no rats crawled into our bags and we had to scrub our shoes so nothing would attract pests onto the boat. After that we went onto the boat and we chose the seats we wanted to sit on. Then we got handed clipboards and booklets, inside the booklets were activities there were places where you could mark off what animals you saw while on the trip. It took just over an hour to arrive at our destination(Urupukapuka Island). When we got there we had morning tea and then were sorted into two groups Roopu Tahi and Roopu Rua I was in Roopu Tahi and we were planting trees first. We had to walk up a lot of hills and it took around 15 to 20 minutes then we got told to steps to planting a plant properly when we arrived at the planting place. It took about ten minutes to plant all the plants. Then we walked back to the place we were staying at and had lunch for 15 minutes, then after lunch the two groups swapped over so now my group were making rat traps and the other group planting trees. We were told to get into groups of three I was with Jacob and Aaron, when we got into the groups we got told for one person from each group to grab the materials needed to make the traps. The materials were 4 pieces of wood, 8 screws and 2 small metal gates. My whole group were really stuck when it came to making traps because we didn’t really know what to do first because we tried to put multiple pieces together and then screwing screws in but it kept collapsing. But then an adult came over and suggested to put a few pieces together and then screw the pieces together and then keep doing that so we did. After we finished we got give a container of felts and was told to decorate our box for the next 5 to 10 minutes. Then when time was up we took some photos while holding our trap. Have you ever made a rat trap before? or have you ever been to Urupukapuka Island?

Crazy Confusing Math

Last week my math group and I made a DLO about our learning. In the question it said we had a restaurant and there were three tables, the biggest table had three times as much as the small one and the medium one had two times as much as the smallest one. Everyone struggled on that part so to make it easier the teacher said to concentrate on the middle part of the question the middle part said on tuesday night three quarters of the seats were taken and then twelve people arrived unfortunately there were only enough seats for half of them. It made it easier because it was easier to understand and we all knew the answer and how to solve it. We all knew that half of twelve is six and if three quarters were full then there were one quarter free, then half of twelve is six and so six is one quarter. So if there are 6 in each quarter and there are 4 quarters so six times four equals twenty-four. Next we were guessing random numbers to equal up to 24 we guessed a lot of numbers then we guessed 4. Next we went four times two which equal 8 then 4 times 3 which equals twelve then we added them altogether and it all equaled up to 24. I think it was really challenging because it was hard to understand. Have you ever done something like this?

Catapult Engineering For King Richard The 3rd

On Tuesday afternoon the year sixes got into groups of 3 and 4 then attempted to build a catapult. I was in a group of 4 with Hudson, Jaelyn-Marie and Manaaki. We got the materials that we were going to use, the materials were 30 bamboo sticks, 30 rubber bands, 1 roll of electric tape, string, scissors, two A4 paper, 1 A3 paper, measuring tape and 1 ping pong ball. We had to launch 1 ping pong ball at least 3 metres using the materials that we were given. Then we brainstormed for a bit, after we finished brainstorming we built a sturdy structure made out of bamboo sticks and rubber bands. The thing I found hard was building the launching part of the build. But then we started to talk with each other, then we came up with multiple ideas but we finished just as the time was up so that was a bit dumb but we had fun. I think we did really good at the base and how sturdy it was. I think we need to improve on communicating with each other.

Confusing Instructions

On the first day back at school we had a reading test so the teacher could see if we were able to read instructions properly. Firstly we got a pencil and then our teacher handed out the sheets of paper that we were going to write on. The first thing on the sheet of paper there were 23 instruction we had to follow, the first instruction was to “read everything carefully before you do anything.” Personally I thought the first instruction meant read the instructions carefully and then do it after you read those instructions. Then I moved onto the second instruction, the second instruction said to “ Put your name in the upper right hand corner of the sheet” so I did that and so on. I carried on until the time was up. When the time was up we got told to sit on the mat when we sat down the teacher talked us through the first few instructions, when she did some of us just noticed what the first instruction was meant to read all of them carefully before you do anything. Then when you got to the last instruction it said to only do question one and two and then draw something at the back of the paper.

At the end I felt so embarrassed when we got told what the last instruction said. I learnt to read things carefully. In the future I think I will try get better at reading things care. Have you ever done a reading test like that?

Maori Pronunciation

This week in Te Ngahere we have been doing things around Te Reo Maori. We had to record us repeating and learning the Maori alphabet, Maori place names and Maori vowels. During this session I learnt how to pronounce Maori place names properly and learnt what the Maori words are for the place names. During this I thought I did well at the Maori vowels, and the Maori alphabet. I think I need to practise more on pronouncing my Maori place names more accurately and need to pronounce the vowels correctly.

Best Lunch EVER!!!

On Tuesday my class went to Greens for Shivam’s birthday Shivam is one of my classmates in Te Ngahere. The reason we went to Greens was because Shivam’s parents own the restaurant. We started walking to Greens around 11:45 it took us around 5 minutes to get there. When we got there we went into the indian cuisine when we walked in we said hello and then got seated. I was sitting on a table with Tawhiwhi, Angela and Jade, after sitting there for a few minutes they gave us a can of Coke or Sprite I got Coke. Then after a few minutes of waiting we finally got our food. We were given Butter Chicken. When my table got our food it was so delicious I felt so happy when I ate it. It took us around 20 minutes or longer to finish when we finished we got surprised at the end with a trolley of easter eggs. They handed them out we got one each there were Pineapple Lumps and Freddo I got a freddo. By thanking Shivam Angela and Jade gave Shivam a birthday card to say thank you, when we gave it to him we put our things down and then performed a few songs for his family to say thank you. Have you had Butter Chicken before?

Smart Surfing

This week in Te Ngahere we have been doing something called smart surfing. Smart surfing is when you find the key words in a sentence and use those keywords when you google something. For example, let's say the question is “What does a spider eat?”. The key words in that question would be spider and eat. Let's change the word eat to diet so now it is “spiders diet” why you change it to spiders diet is because when you write spiders eat it won’t make sense but when you say spiders diet it will make more sense. It is better to use keywords in a google search because when you search the whole sentence you will get an inaccurate result while when you type in keywords in a google search you will get a more accurate result. You get a better result because you when you search the key words it will search the web for those words mainly so when you click on one of the links you will get a more accurate result.

Food Web comparison

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about food webs. Food webs are like a food chain but the food webs cross over each other and point to more than one thing unlike a food chain points to one of it predators and one of it predators only. Arrows that point to the animal from another are the energy that are being transferred to the animal that is eating it. For example the Stoat has red arrow pointing towards it from the Kiwi. So the Kiwi is getting eaten by the Stoat and the Stoat gets energy that has been transferred from the Kiwi. First we had to compare at least three differences between the two food webs. The first difference between our food webs are that the first one has one color per arrow pointing to one thing so for example the Stoat only has one color of arrows pointing to it and then for the rat it is the same then so on. On the second food web it only has some that have one color pointing to it but the rest are a bit random but I was close. The second Difference is that some of the arrows are pointing somewhere else or have more but I have a little less arrows and some of mine are pointing to a different direction. The last difference is that the first one is more complex and hard to understand then the second one is less complex and a bit easier to see. Have you ever made a food web?

Tidying My Drive

On March 24th we had to clean up our Google Drives for any files or documents that we didn’t need so if we had any files sitting in our Google Drive we had to sort it all out. But first we had to clean up a fake Google Drive that our teachers gave us. There were little pictures that had the slogan of one of the google apps that had a title saying what category it is. So we had to put them into the fake folders that we thought the fake google apps go in. If there was no name we had to do something to it for example let's say we had the title geometry we would have to put a blue circle around it but if it said John’s Geometry we didn’t have to put a circle around it. Then the ones that didn’t have a name at all and it was called untitled document or untitled presentation we had to put a red circle around it. Then when we finished we had to tidy up our drive, my drive only had a few things just lying around so I put them in the correct folders and made some new folders I would use at home. After that we had to take a picture of our tidy drive and put it on a google slide. Have you ever had a messy drive?

The Extreme Taskmaster Collaboration

In Te Ngahere we have been doing a taskmaster like thing where we had to collaborate and communicate with our group. We had two attempts to try, on the first attempt we had one drawer in each group our drawer was Jaelyn-Marie. The drawers job is to have the two runners describe for them what the picture looks like and then they have to draw it. Then each group had two runners, the runners job is to run out of the class then look at the teacher’s drawing and then memorize bits and pieces to describe to the drawer what they have to draw. The runners couldn’t point at the picture the drawer was drawing. On the first attempt it was kinda easy to to explain to the drawer but Jaelyn-Marie couldn’t catch on to how we were describing the picture to her and we started to get frustrated. The thing that didn’t work well was that it was hard explaining and remembering the colors to tell the drawer and trying to tell them where to put what without pointing on the piece of paper. The thing challenging were trying to tell them where and how to do it. On the second attempt the thing that changed were we had a different drawer, we had better idea of what it would be because it was the same picture. The things that worked well were that I was able to memorize most of them easier and I also thought that Tiana the other drawer could kinda understand me better. The thing that didn’t work so well was that we were getting frustrated because when we were explaining to her. She was stressing out and we were trying to rush it which led to a few mistakes. Then the thing that was challenging on the second attempt was everything, everything was challenging during the taskmaster but the main thing was communication and trying to be specific. Have you ever done something like taskmaster?

Learning Lichtenstein

For the first week of school I have been in a new learning environment learning new stuff but this one specific thing was my main challenge. We were learning about Roy Lichtenstein and his art. We had to find facts about Roy Lichtenstein that we thought were important to help us with a self portrait. I learnt that Roy Lichtenstein was best known for his painting style called Ben Day Dots and that he became famous for his bright and bold paintings of comic strip cartoons as well as his paintings of everyday objects. He also became famous for his art that looked like comic books. We did lot of research in my class about Roy Lichtenstein. He was in a group of artists making art in the 1960s who were called pop artists because they made art about 'popular' things such as TV, celebrities, fast food, pop music and cartoons. This is where we got the information from Link 1, Link 2.

Have you ever heard of Roy Lichtenstein? Or Have you seen the Ben Day Dots Pattern?.

The Scary Tsunami Evacuation

Last week the Bay Of Islands and my school had to evacuate up a hill because there was a chance of a Tsunami. When we got to the top of the hill we got told to sit down and not to panic but some of us still started to panic. We felt so scared but then we started to cheer up because we got to ring our parents, for a bit so we felt like we were safer. I started to hangout with my friends then one of our teachers got out her phone and gave us some quizzes about Harry Potter and then a quiz about basic knowledge. After that we were starting to get picked up by our parents luckily I was one of them, my dad picked me and my sister up and then dropped us off at the Golf Course next to my mum. But luckily my Brother lived nearby so I asked my mum if I could walk to there house and she let me. So when I got there we just chilled out watching movies but some of us were eating. Later on when we got the thumbs up that there wasn’t gonna be a tsunami we were kinda happy so my parents and my sister came to pick me up and dropped off some more food. Have you ever evacuated for a tsunami? or Were you one of the people who had to evacuate?.
